Dipna Anand Review – October 2024 Dipna Anand’s MK restaurant is located inside the new Santander HQ building down near the station. Unity Place also has a roof-top bar and during the day a food hall and coffee shop. As you might expect the restaurant has quite a functional design and layout. One of our number described it as dystopian which is perhaps a little harsh. Certainly more modern bistro than cosy traditional. The centre of the restaurant has a large square bar so you could happily pop in for a drink as well as go to eat. A micro brewery is on site and the beer is sold in the premises which is quite novel. I have to say we tried the three main beers and all looked a similar colour with tastes to match. The menu is very limited such that some of us struggled to find something suitable. Thoughts on the food was very mixed. Some people were really underwhelmed with the fish curry a low for at least one member. I have to say a couple of us found the large chicken pieces beautifully cooked and flavoured. Bit of a mix of views on the rice and breads and v limited side dishes available. Breads ok but not your normal fluffy naans. This was a Friday night and the place wasn’t very busy but service wasn’t top notch. When we arrived it took a while to get noticed at the bar and then during the meal things could have been better. We also waited an hour between starters and mains which is always too long in my mind. We all left feeling a little disappointed and puzzled. We are not sure what this restaurant is aiming for. It’s not haute cuisine nor is it authentic Indian (in our opinion). Price is not dissimilar to many other restaurants although bottled beer is more than normal. It has a casual bistro vibe but without the snappy service. One thing I would recommend is to get rid of the toy carts that are used to present the micro poppadoms. Highly pretentious, would love to know what Gordon Ramsey would say! My final thought at any restaurant is would I come again? Possibly yes but there are many other places I’d prefer. Richard W

What We Loved

✓Easy access and parking. Unity Place is an office block
✓Modern building with plenty of space between tables. Good toilets
✓Our table for nine was all laid out and ready for us
✓Service was friendly but overall a little slow and seemed inexperienced
✓No Pops ordered as very small but got some complimentary ones while drinking at the bar prior to seating
✓Samosa Chat blast, gentle mix of spice flavours, very nice but one of the orders was cold
✓Fish Pakora starter, good portion, tasty flaky fish
✓Dynamite wings, five of them, brilliantly spicy
✓Lamb kofta, nice tangy sauce and meatballs
✓Meat Tali, tasty with a nice variety
✓Delhi Wala Makhani Chicken, tasty but only a Tikka Masala anywhere else
✓Butter & Peshwari Naans very good
✓Paneer nice but very mild

Areas for Improvement

✗Restaurant lacked ambience
✗Small choice on menu
✗No side orders of vegetables available
✗Lamb Samosa starter, very small serving
✗Dal Makhani, ok, but not a main course
✗Chicken Biriani, quite nice but not as good without the veg curry with it
✗Papa Ji’s fish curry – a strange burnt, vinegary taste
✗Pilau Rice, was only plain rice
✗Saag aloo, a disappointment, the puree texture ruined it
✗Onion Bhajee, small and undercooked
✗Poor Garlic Naan
✗No certificate awarded. Expected great things but, overall, a let down as it seemed to fall between two stools. Design, menu, portions and prices, we could have been in the capital!
