Highlights included excellent Fish Pakora, a satisfyingly spicy South Indian Garlic Lamb, and well-received sides like keema naan, all served in generous portions. A Ganges Gathering: Spice, Smiles, and (close to) St. George's Day Cheer in Towcester
Our April 2026 curry club adventure led us to The Ganges in Towcester, a venue that promised a delicious evening. Eight of us were able to attend, and the pre-dinner festivities kicked off in style at the Towcester Mill Brewery, where a lively St. George's Day beer festival was in full swing. After enjoying the festival atmosphere, a pleasant 15-minute stroll down Watling Street and onto Sponnes Road brought us to the restaurant. Its building and residential location strongly suggested a past life as a local pub – a charming touch!
Upon arrival, we were met with a genuinely warm greeting from the staff and promptly shown to a quiet corner, perfect for our group. The main dining area was bustling by 7:30 PM, which is always a promising sign of a popular spot. Drinks and poppadoms were swiftly ordered and served, accompanied by a truly impressive array of pickles that got our taste buds tingling.
For my starter, I opted for the Fish Pakora, which proved to be an excellent choice – perfectly cooked and very flavourful. Another standout among our group was the Meat Platter for two, which looked equally tempting. While there was a slight wait for the starters to arrive, once they did, the rest of the meal flowed beautifully.
My main course, the South Indian Garlic Lamb, was rated with two chillies on the menu, and I can confirm that rating was spot on – it packed a satisfying heat! Beyond the spice, the dish was incredibly tasty. My only minor critique was that some of the lamb, which I'd chosen as non-tikka, wasn't quite as tender as I would have liked. However, this was a small point in an otherwise excellent dish. Around the table, the rices, vegetable dishes, and various breads were all very well received, with the keema naan earning particular praise. Portions across the board were notably generous, ensuring no one left hungry.
In summary, this was a very enjoyable meal, with the vast majority of our members thoroughly relishing their dishes. The service throughout the evening was consistently very good, attentive without being intrusive. If I were a local resident of Towcester, The Ganges would certainly become a regular haunt.
